The Diploma in Drama and Theatre, a theatre programme for those interested in theatre and drama is to be launched by Lanka Children’s and Youth Theatre Foundation (LCYTF) from May.

Conducted by Kaushalya Fernando, Prasanna Mahagamage and Namal Jayasinghe who are experts in acting, directing and script writing and other professional artistes from specialised fields, the programme entails all round training such as acting, script writing and analysis, directing, movement and vocal training.

The duration of the first stage of the programme is four months. Within four months, twenty-five in class sessions will be conducted on a weekly basis.

There will be one to two sessions per week mostly on Saturdays, Sundays or other public holidays. Those who successfully complete the first stage are eligible for Certificate (Level IV of NVQ) in Drama and Theatre Arts. Those who continue practical application of Drama and Theatre Arts for a further three to four months are eligible to obtain Diploma (Level V of NVQ) in Drama and Theatre Arts.

The primary focus of this diploma programme is on acting, directing, script writing and dance theatre. Thus the participants will have the opportunity to learn free and structured movements, posture, body flexibility and physical balance, vocal training, pronunciation, voice projection, directing and script writing such as character analysis, improvisation, plotting scenes, etc. The candidates will be selected for the programme in an interview.

Over 30 years, the LCYTF has been training numerous talented youth who are at present engaged in the work of both theatre and film industry at professional level in Sri Lanka. LCYTF was established by veteran actress and playwright Somalatha Subasinghe in 1981.
