‘Kalumaali’ playing at the Wendt today

Ruwanthie de Chickera’s play ‘Kalumaali: a fairy tale for grown-ups’, which was recently shortlisted for the 2012 Gratiaen Award, returns to the Lionel Wendt stage for a one-off English language performance today (April 7), at 7.30 p.m.

The story of Kalumaali is a much loved and often repeated fairy tale in seven-year-old Saki’s family. Through the different accounts of this fairy tale that Saki loves we understand the complex and deep realities of the several adults in her life. The cast includes Kaushalya Fernando, Lakmini Seneviratne, Miranga Ariyaratna, Juanita Beling and child-actress Shyalina Muthumudalige in the role of Saki.
Iranganie Serasinghe, who was in the original cast line-up but was unable to act due to a sudden illness, will be the Chief Guest at today’s performance.

All proceeds from tickets are in aid of the Sri Lankadhara Society—a registered charity founded in 1922 by the late Dr. W. A. de Silva and Mrs. Catherine de Silva. Tickets, ranging from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 350, are available at the Lionel Wendt and Gandhara, Stratford Avenue.

Holiday fun for children at Milk this April

It’s time for some holiday fun at Milk, with special workshops to entertain young minds, providing knowledge and skills in a creative manner on April 8 and 9, and again from April 17 – 20.

The workshops for four to six-year-olds are: “Hello Beaky by Jez Alborough” conducted by Shamali Perera, “Caps for Sale” by author Esphyr Slobodkina, conducted by Anjali and Mala, Fairy Tale Creatures/ Pirates/ Wizards & Witches conducted by Anna Flick from Magic Hands and Pottery painting conducted by Nirosha Ambagahawatte.

For the age group 7-12, there’s: “Making Sewing Fun for Kids” conducted by Rehana from The Studio Stitch Creative Lounge, “Native American Tribe Workshop” by Anna Flick from Magic Hands, “Sinbad the Sailor” conducted by Ramla Wahab, “Sybil Wettasinghe’s Hoity the fox” conducted by Sulochana, a fun cookery workshop “Carrot cake cupcake” conducted by Aarthi, and a theatre workshop conducted by Mind Adventures Theatre Company.

‘Lapalu Sewana’ foundation to release children’s song CD

‘Lapalu Sewana’ Children’s Foundation presents, ‘Punchi apii, Guruthumiyai’ (Us the children and our teacher), a children’s song collection that will be launched on April 7 at 3.30 p.m.at the Bishop’s College auditorium.

Children’s songs and music compositions that form a splendid blend of music to soothe the child’s mind are presented in this collection which is directed by Visharadha Pradeepa Perera and sung by the foundation’s very own child singers. Music is composed by renowned musicians like Dr. Rohana Weerasinghe, Nawaratne Gamage, Edward Jayakody, Samantha Perera, M. R. Choolasinghe, Thissasiri Perera, Sidath Somasundara, Hasantha Jayalal, Pradeepa Perera, Sarath de Alwis, and Saroja Hewawitharana.

The lyricists are Dr. Ajantha Ranasinghe, Kalabooshana Jayampathi Algama, Herbert Kumara, Amarasena Kamkanamge Thilakaratne Kuruwita Bandara, Dr. Premadasa Sri Alawattage, Dr. Praneeth Abeysundara, Prof. Malinga Amarasinghe, Prof. Aruna Lokuliyana, Nalaka Jayasundara, and Jayalath Ravi Dissanayake.

Guest singers are Visharadha Edward Jayakody and Samantha Perera.  Some of the songs in the collection will be performed at the ceremony. Everyone is invited for an evening filled with glimpses into a child’s mind bound to bring back childhood memories in you,” says ‘Lapalu Sewana’ directress, Visharadha Pradeepa Perera.
