Several mothers voluntarily joined to breast-feed the day-old baby found abandoned in a road culvert in Hatton on Monday, the Sunday Times has learned.

Nobody’s child: The culvert in which the baby was found

In an outpouring of public sympathy, more than 5000 people have offered to take custody of the infant, who was yesterday transferred from Watawala Hospital to an orphanage in Peradeniya by order of Hatton Magistrate Amila Ariyasena. The baby is currently in the custody of the Probation Commissioner who will find a suitable guardian for her.

The baby was found by the roadside near Watawala School by a policeman who took her to the nearby hospital. “When the baby came to the hospital it was healthy but unclean,” an official attached to the Watawala Divisional hospital said.

“The nurses here cleaned her and dressed her in fresh clothes. We immediately took measures to vaccinate and give her necessary antibiotics.”
Police are searching for the infant’s mother.
