A Mobitel and Open University of Sri Lanka joint project will teach ‘financial services and management’ to, initially, 550 rural women from farming communities in Jaffna and Hambantota, according to a statement by the Celco.

Sponsored by the Commonwealth of Learning, the first phase of this project uses mobile learning to impart a greater degree of financial literacy amongst this initial group, of which 300 are from Jaffna and the remaining 250 from Hambantota.

Further, the statement also revealed; “Lessons will be disseminated through an Interactive Voice Response System and mobile technology. Each weekly module will include five lessons and an assessment”. The statement quoted Uma Coomaraswamy, Emeritus Professor of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), and Consultant, Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Vancouver, Canada, as stating; “This project which is being launched today is sponsored by COL as a part of strengthening their global Project ‘Lifelong learning for Farmers (L3F)’ initiated in several commonwealth countries. The L3F Project in Sri Lanka is University-based and is implemented in three universities: Colombo, Ruhuna and the Open University of Sri Lanka. (JH)
