Hikkaduwa Sri Wimalabuddhi Maha Vidyalaya has suffered massive losses in terms of physical and human recourses due to the Tsunami disaster of 2004. Today however, Wimalabuddhi is one of the most magnificent of schools in the area, probably in the whole island, due to the high-flying development initiated by the “Foundation of Goodness (FoG)”, a non government organisation, which provides essential services to the ancestral village of Seenigama.

The Foundation of Goodness brought donors to the school after the Tsunami, ensuring that the greatest needs were met by the compassion of overseas donors, including the building of classrooms, and other infrastructure.

Today the school, boosted with all the facilities including an IT centre, Swimming pool, Library, Science Lab, Playground Media Unit, Agriculture Unit and all the aesthetic units. A major part of these have been given by the FoG.

Sri Wimalabuddhi MV is situated in the Galle district, Hikkaduwa division. It was established on September 30, 1935 by a few villagers of Seenigama with six students as “Sri Vidyadhara Buddhist Mixed School”. The founder principal was Mr. K.G. Alexender. Mr. Deva Puralis De Silva who lived at Seenigama was the administrator of this school until this school was handed over to Government.

The Media Unit

In 1964 this school was established as Maha Vidyalaya. As a respect for the great service rendered by Ven. Galvehera Sri Wimalabuddhi Tissa Thero, the school was renamed Sri Wimalabuddhi Maha Vidyalaya.

Former principal Mr.V. Ariyadasa who was appointed in 1964 was the pioneer in getting the Advanced Level classes to the college and his dedicated services brought the college volleyball team up to all island level. The 2004 Tsunami caused a huge setback to the progress of the school as a result the number of students started to decrease. Then principals, teachers and the FoG put up a huge effort to increase the status of the school to the present level.

Today, Sri Wimalabuddhi MV has been boosted with 550 students and 32 teachers. Since September 19, 2011 Mr. M.W.R. Alwis has been serving as the principa. He has al great vision. The school has been fortunate to be selected for the “Mahindodaya 1000 Schools Project” which brings massive developments to the schools in its wake.

The Board of Prefects

Since the inception, the school has experienced a steady progress in the educational field. D .M. Gilton Mendis was the first student selected to the university in 1967. Since then Wimalabuddhi MV has produced several respectable personalities to the nation.
Success in the extracurricular activities began in 1965. The college volleyball team gained all island victories in 1965, 1972 and 1973. The volleyball and netball teams participated in various matches all over the island including North and East. The Under 17 boys 400m and 800m relay teams brought several victories during their tour to Jaffna in 1977. The boys’ badminton team showed their talents in no uncertain terms and became runners-up in the all island badminton championship in 1988. The massive Tsunami disaster was only able to destroy the physical resources of the students but their courage brought the championships to a very high level in the All Island DSI Super Sports Volleyball Championship in 2005 and 2008.

The Foundation of Goodness strengthened the school sporting talents by donating an indoor stadium and a large playground. The

present volleyball coach and the cricket coaches are another precious gift provided by FoG. The FoG is a great pillar to the school’s development, as they support the students not only at school level but also for their higher studies and the development of skills.
As a result the students have excelled not only in sports but also in Language Day, Music, Dancing and Art competitions. A noteworthy feature of the school is they conduct “Bhavana” sessions during the school hours, when the students are free which encourages the students to concentrate in their studies with a sense of peace in the mind.

The Environmental Corp, Media Unit and the Civil Aviation Society are the newly organised units which encourages the students to develop their skills. The OBA and the PSI are huge pillars in each and every development project of the school.

Going in the path of their mission “orientate our resources in keeping with educational policies, fundamentals modes and standards with the hope of “creating excellent children” ,Hikkaduwa Sri Wimalabuddhi MahaVidyalaya, no doubt, will dazzle as a true leader to the nation in the near future.
