Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Anuwar Ali, President/Vice Chancellor of Open University Malaysia (OUM) paid his inaugural visit to IIHS, along with the Vice president Mr. Repin Ibrahim on the 31st of January 2013 to further strengthen the relationship between the two institutes. This occasion was graced by Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva, Provincial Director of Health-Western Province, Ministry of Health Sri Lanka, and other distinguished guests such as Prof. J.N.O. Fernando, Prof. Gunapala Nanayakkara and Prof. Bhathiya Karunarathna.
The Open University Malaysia (OUM) is a university jointly owned by a consortium of 11 major public universities in Malaysia.Operating as a private university, OUM capitalizes on digital technological advancements to offer open and distance learning to learners anytime, anywhere. It delivers a wide variety of higher degrees in key disciplines of study including Nursing Science, Social Science, Humanities, Management, Education, Technology and Professional Studies. OUM currently consist of a student base of over 35,000 and also a cumulative enrollment figure of over 110,000 students during the past 11 years of operations.

Apart from its 60 learning centers onshore in Malaysia OUM has several International Centers in countries like Ghana, Hungary, Bahrain, Maldives, Yemen, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. IIHS (www.iihsciences.com) is OUM’s 1st international center as well as the only healthcare partner in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Kithsiri Edirisinghe, Deputy Chairman of IIHS welcomed the distinguished OUM delegation and appreciated the support extended towards this successful collaboration which has enhanced the nursing education at a national level. He further elaborated on the contribution made by OUM and IIHS towards the Nursing profession in Sri Lanka through the Bachelors and Masters in Nursing programmes. Dr. Edirisinghe also briefed the audience about the plan to conduct the PhD programme in Nursing in the coming years. Dr. Edirisinghe also briefed the gathering regarding the first ever Professional Health Forum for Nurses and Allied Healthcare Professional to be conducted in Sri Lanka in April 2013, organized by IIHS. He invited all national and international Nursing professional to participate in this forum, which consists of a workshop in research and a research forum for publications.

Dr. Nihal de Silva, Dean of IIHS described the humble beginnings of IIHS as ACHS 10 years ago, and went on to describe the progress made thus far. He thanked all those who supported this progression, such as Dr. Leonard Ranasinghe, Dr. Julia Pierce of USA and Dr.

Amal Harsha De Silva. He further stated that he was very proud that more than 15 universities have now recognized IIHS, which initially started in Kandy as a social project. Dr. de Silva emphasized the value of training nurses for the global market and stated that the dream of the founders’ of contributing towards portraying Sri Lanka as suppliers of skilled labour is now coming true.

Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva, stated that IIHS was one of the best training institutes in Sri Lanka today and he urged the youth of Sri Lanka to take on the global opportunities available for trained healthcare professional. He further appreciated the efforts made by IIHS and OUM to uplift the profession of nursing in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Pradeep Samanjeewa, Nursing Officer of Teaching Hospital Karapitiya and Mrs. Himali Ward In-charge Nurse of Lanka Hospitals, Colombo, both who are undergraduates of the BNS programme, shared their experiences with the audience. They appreciated the efforts made by both OUM and IIHS to deliver an affordable and high quality program for Sri Lankan nurses.

Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Anuwar Ali stated that he was impressed to hear of the experiences of the Sri Lankan students of the Bachelor (Hons) Nursing Science programme and their development thus far. Prof. Anuwar Ali invited the 70 plus candidates who are employed as nurses of both the government and private health sectors of Sri Lanka to attend the graduation ceremony to be held in Malaysia.
