With the video gaming industry constantly evolving, two young students with diverse talent from the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT-www.iit.ac.lk) have taken the gaming world to a new dimension.

Through IIT’s unique academic guidance, Stefan Udumalagala and Hasitha Dananjaya have created a product to market in the sphere of gaming.

Revolutionizing the video gaming industry, the two IIT students has brought about the immaculate design of an innovative glove that could be used instead of the joystick or a controller which is generally used in gaming. This glove provides the user with multiple benefits in terms of more flexibility and thus, making it extremely user-friendly while giving the player additional control over the game.

This new input device has the capability of providing not just one device function but a combination of functions from many devices. The study introduces a new technology called ‘SkinTouch-Inputs’ using Ultra-Sonic Ranger as an alternative for the keyboard and gamepad buttons. This enables the user to customize the gaming environment according to his preference.

The ProtoXGamingGlove (PXG²) combines the capabilities of mouse, keyboard, joystick and gamepad by using accelerometer, thumb slide joystick, soft buttons and SkinTouch-Inputs in a manner which is intuitive. The PXG² was tested under three gaming categories: strategy, simulation and First Person Shooter by multiple users.

The tests confirmed that the PXG² was a robust alternative for traditional input devices. Evaluations with end users proved that it is a user friendly device which can be adapted to any gaming environment.

Stefan, who has been a gaming enthusiast for a while said that game developers have to think about how they could cater to expand to international markets as it is one of the novel industries in today’s world.

“Games such as Angry Birds and Words with Friends are highly accessible and are attracting users outside the traditional gamer demographic. Analysts expect the industry sales to nearly triple to about $12 billion by 2017. If you can attract a big enough gamer-base following, it could be vastly profitable; hence, the interest in this industry is growing,” Stefan said.

Endorsing this viewpoint, Hasitha said that the gaming entertainment industry offers some of the most dynamic and rewarding professional opportunities available today.

“It is a fast-paced and exciting industry, where creative, ambitious individuals can grow and thrive,” Hasitha said.

Hasitha further added that at IIT they were taught to think out of the box and develop innovative ideas that transcend global barriers.

“The institute offered us the chance to gain knowledge about up and coming industries such as gaming and helped us to learn more

with the availability of the information they gave us. This laid the platform for unprecedented opportunities,” he said.

Prior to Stefan and Hasitha’s recent innovation, during the past decade there have been many computer input devices that helped the user. Yet such devices had limitations such as the inability to customize, lack of support for using multiple devices in parallel and support for natural interaction.

When asked the support rendered by IIT to their students to be innovative, Stefan obligingly said that the Institute has constantly encouraged their students to strive for their best and to recognize both effort and level of achievement reached.

“The Institute really cares about its students and opportunities for career growth are limitless. IIT is always well informed of the upcoming trends in technology and have the right blend of lecturers who possess a wealth of knowledge and are on par with any international educators that you would get at any university overseas. This is truly a great benefit and has proved to be very valuable to us as students. In addition to all this, they encourage you and are very supportive in taking the time to understand your interests. They certainly do take special care to harness your individual talents,” he said.

Adding to this, Hasitha said, IIT students have the capacity to work in a global environment and this is mostly due to the grounding that is provided at the institute and the guidance they have been given through the lecturers who are well experienced in the industry.

“The study programmes are thoughtfully structured allowing one the maximum exposure to theoretical as well as practical understanding of the subjects along with practical application and how to apply the classroom study to real life situations. It was through all this that we were able to think out of the box and come up with this idea which we believe will add immense value to gaming and die-hard gamers,” Hasitha said.

Both Stefan and Hasitha also brought to light that the development of soft skills is another aspect that IIT places great importance on. They encourage students in this area and develop them in order to ensure that they may stand out in the corporate world.

The changing environment of the business world into an integrated and social environment requires the knowledge of a plethora of soft skills such as presentation skills; time management, personality development and leadership training which are all instilled at IIT together with the other extra-curricular activities which provides a comprehensive learning environment for the student .

The duo stated that they would not hesitate to recommend the institute to others and said that they truly appreciated the levels of commitment and dedication that the IIT staff and panel of lecturers have given them, which in turn has contributed immensely in giving them the incentive to be creative innovators in their respected field of study. Focusing on students strengths and being supportive of their endeavors has been a key factor in IIT producing students such as Stefan and Hasitha.
