Computer gaming and e-Sports have fast become the most popular choice of interactive entertainment amongst both teenagers and adults the world over. Sri Lanka too has shown an outburst of enthusiasm for gaming over the past few years, breeding young gamers who are geared for the kill.

In an effort to bring the local competitive gaming scene closer to our international counterparts, Gamer.LK has taken the initiative to organise the ‘Sri Lanka Cyber Games 2012’ (SLCG) tournament – an annual gaming tournament held under international standards, giving Sri Lankan gaming a legitimacy that the country had not earned in the past. SLCG 2012 will build on its predecessors SLCG 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, all of which were successfully carried out. SLCG is considered the largest and most innovative competition for gamers in the country.

Last year’s competition saw the Sri Lankan team proving itself over the national team of Maldives. Passion and grit for video gaming has been running high in Sri Lanka. The idea for the Sri Lanka Cyber Games tournament was conceived with a number of goals in mind. “At a time when video games and e-sports are in a rapid growth stage in Sri Lanka, it is important to foster the local community and concentrate on building up competitive e-sports within the country. We set about organising SLCG with these goals as a priority”, said an organiser from SLCG.

“Apart from small tournaments held at gaming-cafes around Sri Lanka, there were no large-scale tournaments that gamers from all areas and interests could gather and interact at. The Gamer.LK website strives to gather all Sri Lankan gamers under one flag on the Internet, and SLCG is the place for gamers in real life, once a year, every year,” he adds.

Video gaming for the majority of young Sri Lankans is a leisure time activity, however that perception is what the organisers at SLCG aspire to change promoting video games as a sport.

Gaming cafes in the country hold their mini-tournaments every month, but it was limited only to those who frequented the cafes and suffered from a lack of exposure. “We organisd SLCG with the goal of extending a hand to gamers throughout the country,”he adds, stating that the preliminary rounds held in Kandy were organised with this concept in mind. The SLCG Colombo Qualifiers and Grand Finals which began on November 16, wil conclude today at the BMICH and will feature popular PC games Counterstrike 1.6, Call of Duty 4, Defense of the Ancients, NFS Most Wanted, Trackmania, and FIFA 11.

An estimated 1,200 participants are expected to register and over 50,000 spectators are expected attend the event.
