Javed Bongso and Deelaka Herath saved S. Thomas’ with an unbroken stand of 142 runs for the third wicket helping them to draw their Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter against Prince of Wales in the Inter-School cricket game concluded at De Zoysa Stadium, Moratuwa yesterday.

Javed cracked an unbeaten 103 which included eight boundaries and a six while Deelaka chipped in with a half century enabling S. Thomas’ – batting the second time with a deficit of 151 runs – to end the day on 196 for 2.

Earlier in the day Prince of Wales declared on their overnight score of 269 for 8 which came on the back of a knock of 106 inclusive of 14 boundaries and a six and another fine knock of 70 coming from Suchira Fernando which had 11 boundaries and a six. This was in reply to the Thomians first inning score of 118.

At Ananda Mawatha the match between Ananda and St. Benedict’s too ended in a tame draw. St Benedict’s resuming from their overnight score of 63 for 4, went on to make 184. This was in reply to Ananda’s 169. Ananda batting the second time ended the day on 194 for 6 with Thushara Samarakoon and Dasun Wijesinghe making half tons.

No decision at Pallekelle

The Sylvestrians had a decided edge in their match against the Antonians when the rains lashed down and forced a no decision at Pallekelle.

Useful contributions, especially from Viraj Deepal and Charleas Praveen helped the Antonians total a modest 157. Leading all rounder Sumeda Dissanaike bagged another five wicket haul. First drop batsman Hansamal Perera had steadily accumulated 41 when the match ended.

The Antonians probably could not adjust to the matting, having played all their previous matches on turf, home and away.

Weather stalls Rajans

The weather gods stalled the Rajans as they advanced towards a possible win over Sri Summangala Panadura in their match played at Lake View.

A lot of playing time was lost as play stopped at 1.10 pm on the first day and at 1.58 on the second.

Jayapathma Bandara used whatever time was available to proceed serenely to 114. Meebedda and Thimud made useful contributions.
The visitors were struggling at 69 for 5 when the match was stopped. T.R. Silva made a determined 35 in 107 balls.

A 148 run partnership for the fourth wicket between Ishara Hewage (99 with 18 fours) and Rajitha Ranatunga (52 with 9 fours) helped Sri Rahula, who was following on, to amass 284 and eventually tighten the screws on Al Azhar in their Under 19 match at Akurana. Later on, stockily built Mithun Maitipe stuck seven sixes and three fours in his unbeaten 61. M.N. Rahamatullah (66) and M. Wazeen (5 for 65) performed best for the home team, while their leading batsmen Umair Khan made an attractive 35. Buddika Randeniya had 5 for 50 on debut.
