Annual exhibition at Cora Abraham Art School

“It is ridiculous to grade talent….The child sees the world differently from the way he draws it Any correction by the teacher which refers to reality and not to the child’s experience interferes greatly with the child’s own experience Never ask the child, what is this that you have drawn? Rather ask the child what it has tried to draw”

This was the thinking of Cora Abraham and perhaps best expresses the vision behind the school she founded 63 years ago. The concept of ‘education through art’ was brought in by her- where children are not told what to draw, but rather are given all the materials they need and told to draw anything they want.

The 240 young students of the Cora Abraham Art School will hold their annual art exhibition next weekend. They will also conduct a silent auction of the students’ group work murals, the income of which is used for the publication of a book on Cora Abraham, “The artist in every child” compiled by Neville Weeraratne.

The exhibition will be held on October 20 and 21 at the Lionel Wendt from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Entrance is free.
