The annual All Island Senior Citizens Scrabble Tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Association for Senior Citizens in association with the Sri Lanka Scrabble League will take place for the seventh consecutive year. Founded in 1989, the Sri Lanka Association for Senior Citizens is a government approved charity-based organisation that has been catering to the needs of the elders in our society for the past 25 years.

The association’s main objective is to improve the quality of life of the elderly and promote independence. There are three branches at Kandy, Panadura and Nawala. The main group meets every Friday from 9 till 12 noon at St. Paul’s, Milagiriya, Parish Hall.

“We get together here to make lonely elders happy,” says committee member, Indrani Athukorale. “We play entertaining games like Scrabble, 304, Bridge and Carrom. Our doctors have advised us to keep our minds occupied which we can’t do at home. Most of our members are alone, their partners having passed away and they live with their children who go to work. During the day, they are alone at home with nothing to do and no one to speak to. Even once a week, our meeting is something we always look forward to.”

“We organise two outings per year as well as an Avurudu Kema Mese, Avurudu Utsawaya, a Christmas lunch, sing-along occasions and game days. We also conduct eye and medical clinics free of charge for members,” says the association’s secretary, Nirmala Attygalle.

The scrabble tournament takes place on November 4 at the Colombo Hilton, from 7.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. All participants should be over the age of 50 and will have to bring their own scrabble sets along with lunch. The last day for entries is October 28, and entries will not be accepted on the day of the tournament. For further details contact, Indrani Athukorale (secretary) at 0112696993, or Dalryn Wijesinghe (chairperson) at 0716158393.
