Organized by the English Literary Association of the institution, the debates sought to improve debating standards amongst Sri Lankan universities and promote a network of cooperation and understanding among the participating institutions. The debates, held this month at the Law College premises, saw the participation of ten teams from six universities. These included the University of Colombo, University of Peradeniya, University of Jaffna, University of Kelaniya, the Sabaragamuwa University and the University of Moratuwa.

The only inter-higher educational institutions’ debate competition in Sri Lanka, the Hulftsdorp Debates was inaugurated this year. As such, while the level of debate was nothing extraordinary, it was certainly above par and an optimistic indicator of excellence in the future.

The two teams that qualified for the final round were the Sri Lanka Law College A Team and Moratuwa University A Team. They faced each other in the grand final at the Advanced Legal Institute Hall of the Law College, debating the issue of the Inter-university Student Council and its abolishment. The Law College proposed the topic, while the Moratuwa University Team opposed it. They were watched and supported by an audience of their contemporaries, Chief Guest Solicitor General Palitha Fernando, Guest of Honour -the President of the Bar Association,w Wijedasa Rajapakshe and judges from the Debators Council of Sri Lanka.
