Yahoo stepping up!

Tech Talk with Devaka

I gave up on Yahoo Webmail years ago simply because it was never good enough for me. Most Web mails are good, but to succeed you have to be better than just good. Google did this successfully with Gmail.

Yahoo recently, took another swing at becoming that much better with newly designed widgets.
Yahoo added over a dozen widgets to its Webmail service, including integration with PayPal, eBay, YouTube, and Mint.com. These apps will let users do more while within Yahoo Mail, reducing the need to shuffle between Websites and services.

Other useful widgets integrated with Yahoo Mail today include:

  • Zumo Drive - allows users send email attachments as big as 100MB (free)
  • Picnik - crop/resize/retouch photos quickly and share collages
  • Showtime - browse and watch short clips from cable networks’ schedules
  • WordPress - post on your blog and moderate comments
  • Food & Wine Pairing - match your dinner recipe with the perfect wine

These widgets though, are available only for a limited number of people, while the service is in beta period. However, to take them for a spin, you can enter your Yahoo ID here and get things running.

This is a result of a new strategy Yahoo has come up with, in a bid to bring the company to its former Web glory. Whether this will help Yahoo or not, it’s something that we’ll have to wait and see.

Opera 10 beta version released

Opera Software has made the first beta of its latest web browser, Opera 10, publicly available.

The new browser features Opera Turbo technology to deliver web content up to 40 percent faster than its previous browser Opera 9.5. The function will also automatically switch on if a slow connection speed is detected. This further consolidates the feature Opera is best known for, which is speed.

The web browser also features a resizable tab bar, which when pulled down reveals thumbnails of every open tab in your browser window.

Opera 10 allows you to see thumbnails of all open tabs. Opera also expanded the inline spell-checker to support 51 languages and revamped the user interface, with a new design that looks rather hot!

Opera 10 can be downloaded from Opera’s website for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Google Wave

Google Wave is a new tool for communication and collaboration on the web, coming later in 2009. A “wave” is a flow of conversation and documents which people can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps and much more.

With live transmission as you type, participants on a “wave” can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real time. Once again, Google comes up with a unique idea which I personally cannot wait to see how it unfolds. Keep an eye out for it later this year!
