Kandy SC should overcome challenge

By Aubrey Kuruppu

If fast history is anything to go by, the Kandy ruggerites will not exactly be quivering in their boots at the thought of facing the sailors on land. At times, the score line had a distinctly T20 look about it.

But today's confrontation could see a slight departure from the script. It would be a bit far-fetched to rekindle memories of David and Goliath. Yet the Navy can bruise and batter the celebrated consistently – triumphant Kandy XV.

Their optimism is well-founded. At the sevens, Navy gave as good as they got. That was a different day, a different location and a different format, yet the confidence gained from that almost successful skirmish will without doubt be carried over into this game.

Kandy SC's forte is their brilliant back division which comprises Jayasinghe, Liyanage and Marija, inter alia. Not to be outdone, the forwards are a hardy lot, who have been tried and tested and have generally come out unscathed.

All in all, it should be good Sunday evening's entertainment. At the end of it, one fancies that under-dog and top-dog wouldn't have switched places.
