T20 Inter-Schools Final Royal emerge champions

By M. Shamil Amit
Royal emerged champions of the inaugural U19 inter-schools Munchee trophy T20 cricket tournament with a comprehensive eight wicket win over Ananda in the final played at the De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa yesterday.

The match was expected to be an interesting tussle but it was not to be as it turned out to a sided affair. Ananda skipper Dinesh Chandimal winning the toss and electing to bat never recovered after losing their first wicket with just four runs on the board.

They themselves made things difficult as none of their batsmen were able to put the head down and play a responsible knock. At the halfway stage the Anandians were struggling on 49 for 6.

Royal bowlers Yasith Abeykoon and Lakshan Landewela sharing six wickets between them in the end bundled the Anandians for a paltry 91. Royal in their run chase saw opener Sahan Hettiarchchi leading the way with a fine knock of 41 in just 27 balls helping them reach the target in only 14 overs.
Ananda 91 in 20 overs (Pasindu Maudshan 15 n.o.: Lakshan Landewela 3 for 17, Yasith Abeykoon 3 for 20)

Royal 95 for 2 in 14 overs (Sahan Hettiarchchi 42, Bhanuka Rajapakse 29 n.o., Kusal Perera 19 n.o.)
Mahinda defeat Maris Stella

Mahinda defeated Maris Stella by 30 runs in the play off match for the third place which preceded the final between Royal and Ananda. Mahinda taking first lease of the wicket made 127 and then restricted Maris Stella to a score of 93.

Mahinda 127 for 6 in 19 overs (Sajith Kelumpriya 33, Romesh Buddika 21, Tharaka Nimesh 20, Udara Jayasanka 20 n.o.: Ashen Silva 3 for 14)

Maris Stella 93 for 9 in 19 overs (Malinda Samarasekera 21 n.o.: Chalana de Silva 2 for 14, Udara Jayasanka 2 for 18)
