The planned inter-schools T20 cricket tournament will be worked off as scheduled sans three of the 16 confirmed teams that were due to participate. St Patrick’s Jaffna, Dharmaraja and St Joseph’s are the three teams that have pulled out of the tournament.

St Patrick’s was forced to withdraw due to financial restraints as they had spent a colossal sum when they participated in the recently concluded limited over tournament while Dharmaraja and St Joseph’s were finding it difficult to field a team.

Nihal Fernando the secretary of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association stated that they had to postpone the tournament as some of the top cricketers were on national duty in Bangladesh. The delay also saw some of the teams pulling out.

Regarding St Patrick’s Jaffna SLSCA promised to give them accommodation and their meals. But as they had spent over Rs. 400,000/- for their travelling for the limited over tournament they were unable to find the funds this time. There was no time to find any teams to replace the three that pulled out.

The tournament will get underway with the remaining five teams contesting with five of the pre-quarter finals scheduled to be played on May 12. The quarter finals will be played on May 13 and 14 with the two semi finals slotted to be played on May 15 and the final on May 16.

Three teams Royal, St Peter’s and Dharmasoka will now receive walk overs. The remaining five pre-quarter finals matches are Zahira vs Mahinda at Maradana, Ananda vs Nalanda at Ananda Mawatha, Prince of Wales vs Trinity at Moratuwa, DSS vs Thurstan at DSS ground and Maliyadeva vs Maris Stella at Kurunegala. After the conclusion of the pre-quarter finals all the other matches will be played at the De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa.
