New Year auspicious times and colours

New Year dawns on Tuesday, April 14 at 47 minutes after midnight, according to the Cultural Department.

Here are the auspicious times for the Avurudu:

Punya Kalaya (period of religious activities) starts at 6.23 pm on Monday, April 13 and will last till 7.11 am the following day (April 14). Meals should be taken before 6.23 pm on Monday, after which all work should be suspended and religious rites observed till 12.47 a.m. the next day, after which New Year activities may be performed till 7.11 a.m.Lighting of the hearth or cooking: At 5.05 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14 and should be performed attired in pearl coloured clothing facing the north by lighting the hearth to fix kiribath (milk rice) and sweet meats.

Beginning of work, transactions, and partaking of meals should be performed at 5.50 am attired in pearl coloured clothing facing the north.

Anointment of oil: At 7.32 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, facing the east clad in green. Kohomba leaves should be placed on the head, and Kolon leaves underneath the feet. Naanu mixed with oil and Kohomba juice must be applied followed by a bath.

Auspicious time for leaving for work: At 6.28 a.m. in a southerly direction on Monday, April 20, dressed in pearl-coloured clothes following consumption of milk rice mixed with sesame.

The auspicious time for leaving for services-related work is 6.19 am in a Northern direction on Thursday, April 16, dressed in golden coloured clothes following consumption of milk rice made of cow’s milk (ela kiri).
