Polls violence: Police yet to arrest two MPs

By Leon Berenger

Two UPFA MPs are on the run and absconding for their alleged involvement in a killing and the abduction of a 12-year-old boy while the opposition has charged that they have been sighted doing polls campaign work in the Gampaha district.

The two MPs have been identified as Sarana Gunawardene of the SLFP and Piyasiri Wijenayake from the JVP breakaway group, the NFF.

According to complaints made to the police, Mr. Gunawardene is alleged to have abducted the boy after his father who worked for him decided to work for another leading UPFA candidate in the Gampaha district.

The incident took place some 12 days ago, and the suspect MP is still at large although a court has issued a warrant for his arrest. The UPFA MP has denied any involvement in the abduction but added that a person resembling him was possibly involved.

The police say they have deployed two teams to arrest the suspect but without success. In the second incident also in the Gampaha district, Parliamentarian Wijeynayake is alleged to be involved in a shooting incident in which one JVP activist was killed and another wounded at Veyangoda on Monday.
The MP was named in complaints made by eyewitnesses to the Veyangoda police. The vehicle in which the suspect MP was travelling at the time of the shooting is in police custody.

The JVP’s Gampaha District group leader Waruna Rajapakse said the police need not wait for the courts to issue an warrant to arrest the MP.

In the report filed by the JMO it was clearly stated that the incident was a homicide and that was sufficient for police to move against the MP, Mr. Rajapakse said Gampaha district Police Chief S.K. Pathirana said that in both cases they had sent messages asking the suspects to turn up at their respective local police stations where there statements could be recorded. “The two men are however yet to respond,” he said.
