UPFA candidate’s gunfire injures bystander

A UPFA candidate for the upcoming Western Provincial Council elections shot several rounds from a pistol, injuring at least one bystander in the Nawagamuwa area, police said.

Hector Bethmage

They said candidate Hector Bethmage, a former PC member, shot in the air, fearing a mob attack by supporters of a rival candidate from his own party while he was on his way to attend a funeral at a private residence at Navagamuwa.

The police claimed that Mr Bethmage was also assaulted and sustained injuries and an Assistant Superintendent of Police had been appointed to look into the matter.

The bystander who was wounded in the shooting was taken to the Kalubowila Hospital.
