Traffic cops sprout in Jaffna

After nearly 30 years traffic police have been deployed on the streets of Jaffna. Fifty traffic policemen have been deployed for duty in Jaffna town and the deployment will be extended to other areas later.

Police displayed posters in Tamil asking motorists and pedestrians to co-operate in implementing traffic rules in the town.

Police have requested motor cyclists and pillion riders to wear helmets and with the rush to buy helmets there is reportedly a high demand for them.

Helmets are currently selling at between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 2,200. One trader said he had sold helmets to the value of Rs. 100,000 for a day.Some 54.000 motorcycles are registered in Jaffna district, according to the Registration of Motor Vehicles Department.
