Sirasa man out of hospital

Sirasa reporter Susantha Abeyratne, who was assaulted while covering Friday’s protest outside Vihara Devi Balika Vidyalaya, was discharged from hospital yesterday.

Susantha relating his ordeal

Mr. Abeyratne told The Sunday Times that he arrived at the venue at about 12 noon, and was told that a gang of thugs had forced themselves into the school and that some of the parents had fled from the scene.

“As I started filming, some 20 persons surrounded me,” he said. “They started to assault me. They seized my camera and my mobile phone.”

Mr. Abeyratne then left the scene and proceeded to a hospital to be treated for his injuries. According to the Kiribathgoda Police, the Sirasa journalist had not sustained any serious injuries, and that the police were proceeding with their inquiries.

OIC Chaminda Edirisinha said no arrests had been made so far. The attack on Mr. Abeyratne was recorded by other media personnel covering the protest, and pictures of the incident were broadcast on TV on Friday night.
