French Red Cross offers help

The French Red Cross has offered to tour cleared areas of the Wanni in order to provide medical relief to displaced persons, according to sources. A French Red Cross team is expected in the country some time next week.Meanwhile, the World Food Programme (WFP) is using the newly opened sea route to supply food to civilians trapped in the fighting in the North.

WFP country director Adnan Khan said 40 tons of food – enough to feed 80,000 people for a day – were delivered through this route this week, and that a similar shipment will be delivered in the next 24 hours. The government estimates that there are between 75,000 to 100,000 people currently trapped on a tiny beachhead on the coast of Mullaitivu, while the UN places the figure at nearly 200,000.
