By Bandula Sirimanna

Kamal Dharmasiri, an assessor attached to the banking unit of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) who is wanted in connection with the Golden Key fraud case is evading police arrest and has not reported for duty during the past few days.

Criminal Investigation Department’s sleuths are on the look out for the suspect who is now at large, a senior CID official told The Sunday Times FT. It was alleged that Dharmasiri, a resident of Uragasmanhandiya, Ambalangoda had received a sum of Rs. 78 million from Manoj Chaminda , an employee of Ceylinco Insurance who is in remand prison in connection with the case.

He added that the CID officers had visited the IRD several times to locate the suspect but they were informed that he was on medical leave. The IRD will also conduct an inquiry subsequent to revelations in court, a senior department official said, adding that disciplinary action will be taken against the officer if he is found guilty.

Filing a B -report in the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court on February 13, Deputy Solicitor General Sarath Jayamanne revealed that two suspects in the Golden Key fraud case, Khavan Perera and Saradha Sumanasekara had introduced Chaminda to Dharmasiri of the Inland Revenue Department to conduct negotiations on behalf of the company with regard to a tax payment of Rs. 300 million. This tax due was allegedly reduced to Rs. 150 million, of which Dharmasiri had been allegedly paid a sum of Rs. 78 million by Chaminda, it was reported in court.

The CID also found that this money was deposited in the account of Anura Mendis, a friend of Dharmasiri living in the same village.
