Some 4,000 Pramuka depositors get refunds

Small depositors, numbering 3927, of the collapsed Pramuka Bank have been paid Rs 100,000 each by the Sri Lanka Savings Bank (SLSB) set up to resurrect the defunct bank, SLSB officials said. They said another 10,000 depositors who are also entitled to receive Rs 100,000 each, are being paid at the rate of 50 depositors per day, a process which will take another six months.

The new bank began refunding of deposits from June last year. Under this plan, refunds of deposits of over Rs.400,000 will be made from 2013 onwards and Rs. 1 million and above will be paid after 2016. The interest for deposits will be paid after four years, an official said.

The new bank commenced in March last year and is seeking to alleviate the problems of around 14,600 depositors who were made destitute overnight following the sudden collapse and closure of Pramuka Bank in 2002.

However many depositors expressed their dissatisfaction on the repayment scheme saying that they have no alternative other than waiting patiently as they have already waited for six long years. The depositors association is not active now, they alleged. Officials of this association were not available for comment.
