Simpkin to take over as rugby coach again
By Harry Jayachandra
The second round of the sevens organized by the Interim Committee of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) will kick off at the CR and FC Grounds at Longden Place on February 28 at 9am.
This tournament along with the first competition that was held last week in Kandy, will serve as the basis for the selection of players to undergo training for the Hong Kong Sevens that will be held in the last weekend of March.

Chief Executive Officer of the SLRFU Lasitha Guneratne said; "So far Kandy SC, Galle RFC, Kurunegala RFC, Uva RFC, Jawatte Lions, Petersons, CH and FC, CR and FC, Navy and Air Force are among some of the clubs who have confirmed their participation in this tournament."

A spokesman for Army said they would be playing as well. Meanwhile, Secretary of Havelocks Reuben Thananayagam speaking to The Sunday Times said; "There isn't a player revolt at the club. There were just a couple of issues. We had a meeting on Friday and will be meeting again tomorrow or the day after. We will definitely be playing in the Colombo Sevens. We have about 20 to 25 players attending practices and they are being coached by Hisham Abdeen."

SSP Duke Hameed of Police said; "We could not take part in the Kandy leg because of professional duties, but we will certainly be playing in the Colombo leg."

Meanwhile in another development, Chairman of the Interim Committee Dr. Maiya Gunasekera said negations were almost complete with George Simpkin with regard to his appointment as national coach.
Simpkin himself said; "This offer to coach the national team came as a complete surprise. I came down to Sri Lanka to get some ayurvedic treatment. We would not be having this conversation if I was not interested in coaching Sri Lanka. However, there are some points that need to be ironed out before I can make a firm commitment. And that's not going to happen before tomorrow. In addition as you know my home is in New Zealand, and there will be a few logistical issues that will need to be sorted out.
