Martros Quadrangular Athletics
Maris Stella makes it three-in-a-row

Maris Stella College athletes proved their all-round prowess by winning the Martros Trophy for the third successive year when they outclassed their rivals by a massive lead at the Maris Stella Grounds in Negombo yesterday.

The quadrangular athletics meet between the hosts Maris Stella, Trinity College Kandy, Royal College Colombo and St. Joseph’s College Colombo churned out fine fare and ultimately Maris Stella surged ahead with 182 points while Trinity occupied second spot with 93 points. Royal were third with 88 points and St. Joseph’s College were fourth with 65 points. Last year Royal were the runners-up but this year Trinity beat their rugby rivals to come in second and push Royal to the third spot.

The meet otganized by the Maristonians Sports Association turned out to be a huge success and brought about a togetherness rarely seen on the field of sports. It was for athletes between the ages 11 to 19.

Former sprint king Sunil Gunewardena was the chief guest and his wife K.G. Badra was the guest of honour.

St. Joseph’s who took part in the event for the first time as regular participants S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia did not take part this year. The Josephians baggded the Under 19 Joy Zufer award winning three events – 100 metres,200 metres and being placed second in the long jump event with 11 points. Trinity was second with 10 points. Udara Silva of Maris Stella was adjudged the best athlete at the meet.
