Sandaru and Nayomi bag under 19 badminton title

Vishaka Vidyalaya’s doubles pair consisting of Sandaru N. Weerasinghe and Nayomi Karunarathna won the under 19 girls doubles title at the All Island Inter School Badminton Championships worked off at the Royal College sports complex yesterday.

The champions whilst in the process of winning the title toppled defending champions M. Gayani Anuthithara and Bimalaka Yehani Wimalasinghe of Anula Vidyalaya. The final score line read 21-12 and 25-23.

Winners were found in the under 17 girls double event as well where H.D. Lekha Shehani of Our Lady of Victory Convent (Moratuwa) paired off with Akila Ayomi Jayamana of Musaeus College to get the better of H.M.K.Ranawana of Musaeus and Mindathi Dunuwille of Mahamaya College 21-11 and 21-18.

Today is the final day of the tournament and several finals will be worked off. The under 19 boys singles final between Nayanakantha Wijesekera of Ananda College and Udara Nayanajith of Royal College will take centre stage.

It will be a thrilling contest when Gayani Perera of Anula Vidyalaya takes on Subodha Dahanayake of Musaeus College in the under 19 girls singles final. Both players are in excellent form and the match is expected to go down to the wire.
