This ambassador took wing to Vietnam to take part in one of the most prestigious events in the world. Back home, still basking in the golden memories of an exciting event, Miss Sri Lanka For Miss Universe 2008 Aruni Rajapaksha is celebrating her latest achievement of being ranked 18th at the prestigious Miss Universe pageant.

Held over a month from June 17 to July 17 in Vietnam, the pageant was a memorable experience, says Aruni.

“The pageant was hosted by Mel B of Spice Girls’ fame and organised by an American group, so we received the guidance of the best choreographer in New York. We had to perform with a Hollywood pop singer live on stage for the bathing suit competition. All 80 contestants received VIP treatment with personal body guards and FBI police assistance. There were also charity auctions from the national gifts brought by each contestant and the proceeds of the auction were utilized for AIDS campaigns and to help orphans,” Aruni said.

Being with the other contestants; sharing their experiences; getting to know about their countries, their traditions and way of life were highlights for Aruni.

“It is more or less like getting an insight into 80 different countries even without visiting them. All the participants were friendly. We used to exchange ideas on make-up and hair styles,” Aruni said. Asked what it is like facing an international audience, the slender 5 7’ beauty says she had mixed emotions. “It was a live programme, so on the one hand I felt honoured to represent my country, but then you have a great responsibility to do your best in every possible way.”

Aruni now hopes to get involved in training future contestants as well as devoting more time to charity work. “It is mandatory that those representing Sri Lanka in future pageants receive a basic idea of the event from a person who has had the exposure to such a competitive event prior to taking part,” she stresses.

Having taken part in three international pageants - Miss Tourism Queen International in China (2007), Miss International in Japan (2007) and Miss Universe 2008 pageant in Vietnam, Aruni says that in her experience a perfect walk and stage performance are crucial aspects at such pageants.
