Kapila Chandrasena’s body released; cause of death remains inconclusive

The body of Sri Lankan Airlines’s former chief executive officer Kapila Chandrasena was released yesterday to his relatives for final rites after the postmortem examination, police said.
There is no conclusive cause of his death so far, but specimens taken from his organs have been sent for testing by the Government Analysts’ Department.
Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena issued the order for the autopsy after considering submissions made by the Kollupitiya Police, who are investigating the circumstances of the death. The magistrate directed the Colombo National Hospital director to appoint a five-member Judicial Medical Committee to conduct the examination.
The court also instructed the medical panel to submit a report on the postmortem by May 12.
Mr Chandrasena was found dead at a relative’s house in Colombo-03 on Friday.
His death came hours after the Colombo Magistrate’s Court issued an order for his re-arrest two days after he was released on bail.
Mr Chandrasena had been in remand custody since mid-March facing bribery charges in connection with the purchase of Airbus aircraft for the national carrier. during a 2013 deal to purchase 10 aircraft worth US$2.3 billion.
