View(s):By Ranjith Padmasiri
Accused former Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody has accepted three out of the 31 points presented to him by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) during the pre-trial conference on the case prior to the case being taken up at the High Court.
Accordingly, Mr Jayakody has accepted that he had served at the Lanka Fertiliser Company during the period relating to the charges against him and that he was also a member of the company’s procurement committee.
It was decided to consider the other points presented by the CIABOC during the trial. High Court Judge Rashantha Godawela ordered the defence to submit documentary evidence to prove the facts the accused had accepted. Evidence into the case will be heard from June 17. Two witnesses for the prosecution are to give evidence in court on that date.
CIABOC Assistant Director Asitha Anthony, leading the prosecution, stated that the prosecution would require six or seven days to present its evidence.
The defence has requested three days to present its own evidence.
The CIABOC has indicted the former minister on two counts: facilitating a private company to make undue financial profits and causing a loss of over Rs 8.8 million to the state while serving as the procurement manager of the Lanka Fertiliser Company in 2016. He is currently out on bail.
Nalinda Indatissa, PC, with Attorneys-at-Law Pasindu Gihan Batagoda, Malka Deneththi and Akalanka Ukwatta, appeared for the accused.
