St. Bridget’s secure cager double crown
View(s):St. Bridget’s Convent emerged champions at the Under-17 Division ‘A’ Tier I Basketball Tournament in the finals held at the Nalanda College basketball courts before a large and enthusiastic crowd. In a thrilling encounter, St. Bridget’s Convent faced St. Joseph’s Girls’ School, Nugegoda in the final and secured a convincing victory by 58-37, showcasing skill, determination, and excellent teamwork.
In the Under-15 Tournament, which had been delayed since 2024 due to unforeseen issues, was finally concluded in 2026 following persistent efforts by school authorities and parents as St. Bridget’s received walkover from Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya who did not take the court for the final. These remarkable triumphs hold special significance as it comes during the school’s 125th jubilee year, adding further pride to the celebrations. Notably, this is the first time in over 15 years that St. Bridget’s has secured championship titles at this level.

In the Under-17 final, individual brilliance came to light, with Minadie Fernando being crowned the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, while Taharah Arzoon was awarded the Best Offensive Player. In the Under-15 segment, Enaya Fernando was named the Most Valuable Player for her outstanding contribution, while Diyanga Gunawardena earned the Best Defensive Player award for her impressive display on court.
“This double victory stands as a proud milestone in the school’s sporting history and a true reflection of the hard work, resilience, and spirit of the Bridgetine basketball team,” stated the Principal, Rev. Sr. Sujani Fernando, who has been a tremendous source of strength in elevating the sporting standards in school. The team’s success is a testament to the dedication and guidance of Head Coach Roshan Randima, ably assisted by Marisha Fernando and sports officials Hemanthi de Zilva, Maheshi Gunasena and Nushaya Maliyadda.
