Relentless consistency drives Dilum Sudeera’s path to national selection
As the national team looks to the future through domestic cricket, a promising spin-bowling all-rounder has emerged. Dilum Sudeera Thilakarathne, who possess grit, perseverance, and consistency, is transforming himself into a versatile cricketer who is set to shine at international level, driven by a dream to represent his country for a prolonged period in all three formats.
Having noticed his passion and the enthusiasm, his parents encouraged him to take up cricket. Initially playing softball cricket along with his brother, as time progressed Sudeera was introduced to school cricket at Karandeniya Central College, where he grew under the coaches Ajantha Kumara and Dinesh Kumara. They were the ones instrumental in identifying the youngster’s capabilities as an all-rounder.

Despite hailing from a middle-income family in Ambalangoda, Sudeera’s journey was never hindered by financial issues. His family ensured of his primary focus to develop as a cricketer and chase his ultimate dream. Having progressed through every age group at Karandeniya Central, Sudeera’s appointment as Under-13 captain ignited a blossoming career. With the relentless support offered from the coaches and family, 2015 proved a breakthrough year as he carried that form into the Sri Lanka Under-15 tour of Malaysia, emerging as a consistent performer in a victorious campaign.
Sudeera returned home high in confidence and continued to dominate the provincial tournament held soon after. He picked 16 wickets in eight matches and bagged the best bowler award, boosting his ambitions of breaking into the Sri Lanka Under-19 set up. His career accelerated in 2016, finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the provincial three-day tournament with 30 wickets in 10 games. He followed it up with a remarkable school season scoring 700 runs and bagging 112 wickets to clinch the best all-rounder and emerging player awards.
Despite prioritising cricket, Sudeera excelled academically as well, securing four ‘A’ and five ‘C’ passes at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level, with his parents playing a key role in emphasising the value of education. His academic achievements allowed him to progress in cricket, earning a move to Richmond College, Galle, where he turned out for the First XI from 2017 to 2019 under coaches Dhammika Sudarshana and Lakmal de Silva. A standout performance on debut in the 2017 Lovers’ Quarrel, he earned best bowler honours and repeated the feat in 2018 with a nine-wicket haul, paving the way for a resounding Richmond victory.
“Breaking into the Under-19 set up is tough, given the competition in school cricket. I feel I have justified my sacrifices and reaped the rewards,” with his short-term ambition within reach, Sudeera reflected.
Since breaking into the Under-19 set up in 2019, Sudeera has grown into a reliable performer under Spin Bowling Coach Sachith Pathirana, taking 25 wickets in 15 matches at 20.32 during the 2019/20 cycle. After the ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, he had brief stints with Galle Cricket Club and SSC’s Under-23 side before heading to England, where he bagged 48 wickets in 12 One Day matches for Frankton Cricket Club in 2021 as he enjoyed a career-defining six months.
Following his successful stint, he joined Tamil Union in 2022 and made an instant impact, taking 52 wickets in five matches at an average of 10.44 in the Major Club Emerging three-day tournament to earn a call-up for the England Emerging tour. His Lanka Premier League stint with the then Dambulla Aura franchise, offered valuable exposure, grabbing four wickets in four matches at an average of 17.00.
Sudeera’s rise in domestic cricket has been evident since his debut in 2019, but the National Super League Limited Over Tournament marked a turning point in his white-ball career. Since its inception in 2022, he has been a consistent wicket-taker, finishing as the second-highest in 2023 with 14 scalps in nine matches at 19.57, before dominating the tournament once again in 2024 with 20 wickets at an impressive average of 15.20 to be crowned the best bowler.
His resurgence in the 50-over format was carried into the longer format, where he claimed 12 wickets in four matches in the 2024 National Super League four-day tournament. After three successful years with Tamil Union, he moved to Police Sports Club late in the 2024/25 season, aiming for a national call-up. The decision paid immediate dividends, as Sudeera shone on his debut season for Police SC in the Major league three-day tournament picking up 61 wickets in eight matches at 14.93 while contributing with valuable runs with the bat in the lower order. That was when Sudeera earned a call for the Emerging tour of West Indies. On his return, Sudeera continued his fine form in the Major League Limited Over Tournament, taking 15 wickets in seven matches at 15.93.
Then came the crunch moment of his career. After an attention grabbing Major League three-day tournament 2025/26, where he stamped his authority with 61 wickets in 10 games at an average of 25.11 to be crowned the best bowler of the tournament. With that Sudeera also earned his maiden call up in to the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team for the home series against New Zealand. Sudeera grabbed his opportunity with both hands and ended up as the leading wicket taker with 11 scalps in the two-match series, including a match-winning 10 wicket haul in the second unofficial Test.
Sudeera’s consistency across formats is reflected with the 270 first class wickets, 132 List ‘A’ scalps, and 17 T20 wickets, supported by an impressive economy rate and valuable lower-order runs. Inspired by the legendary Rangana Herath, Sudeera believes he is close enough to be in national contention and is hopeful of achieving his childhood ambition of representing Sri Lanka.
