Aveesha, Senuja guide Joes to victory
Half-centuries by Aveesha Samash and Senuja Wekunagoda paved the way for St. Joseph’s College to coast to a comfortable 4-wicket win over traditional rivals St. Peter’s College in the 52nd Battle of the Saints Limited-Overs encounter played at the SSC yesterday.
The win saw St. Joseph’s regain the Rev. Fr. Peter Pillai Memorial Shield after a lapse of two years, dashing the hopes of the Peterites of making it three in a row. This was the 26th win of the series for the Josephians, with the Peterites trailing on 23 wins.

Aveesha cracked 85, which included 10 boundaries, while Senuja hit a quick-fire 73 off 58 balls that featured seven boundaries and four sixes. The pair shared a valuable 119 runs for the third wicket to help the Josephians in pursuit of 233 runs for victory, as they raced to the target with ease in the 42nd over.
Earlier, the Peterites, invited to take first lease of the wicket, saw openers Savi Fernando and Dineth de Silva give them a solid start of 50 runs, but they lost three quick wickets and slipped to 83-4 in the 17th over.
Jason Fernando, who top-scored with 52, and skipper Enosh Peterson rescued them with a 64-run stand for the fifth wicket. However, after the pair was separated, they lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 231, a total that proved insufficient to defend.
