Tree walk: Get to know these sylvan sentinels in the heart of the city
View(s):This green oasis in Colombo is hidden in plain sight; one forgets what a blessing it is to have a refuge for the flying foxes, the occasional thalagoya and kabaragoya; a roost for the egret or the rock pigeon and of course a haven for sibilant, shady greenery.
On Saturday, May 2, Ruk Rakaganno – the tree society of Sri Lanka will celebrate the erstwhile Victoria Park with a tree walk where artist and environmentalist Channa Ekanayake will introduce walkers to these sylvan sentinels in the heart of the city. Commencing at 8 a.m. from the War Memorial, Channa will lead the walkers through the diverse indigenous and exotic trees of Viharamahadevi Park.
As the park is surrounded by landmark buildings, this walk will also include brief discourses about the Town Hall, the Art Gallery, the War Memorial, Nelun Pokuna by Chamila Sirisena, Valuation Officer, Assessors’ Department from the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).
The walk will commence at 8 a.m. after a short welcome at the War Memorial, Marcus Fenando Mawatha, Colombo 7, adjoining the Public Library and is planned to take two hours. Participants will get the opportunity to meet like-minded people and enjoy a morning in May which is known as the peak of the flowering season. It is a continuation of the tree walks Ruk Rakaganno had at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour garden a year ago and again at Nugegoda Welipark in October 2025.
