View(s):Efficient energy management: This is the time for the SSEA to show leadership
The Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SSEA) bears a national responsibility in guiding the public towards efficient energy management, particularly at a time when the country faces escalating energy costs and increasing environmental challenges.
It is imperative that the Authority take a more proactive and visible role in educating citizens on the selection of energy-efficient appliances and the adoption of practical measures to transform homes into energy-conscious living spaces. Public awareness campaigns, technical guidelines, and accessible advisory services must be strengthened and widely disseminated.
Equally important is the need for the SSEA to engage closely with architects, engineers, and property developers. Clear and enforceable guidelines should be introduced for the design of domestic houses and condominiums, with special emphasis on natural air circulation, climate-responsive architecture, and optimal rooftop orientation to facilitate solar energy adoption. Such forward-thinking design principles would significantly reduce long-term energy dependence.
The Authority should also collaborate with municipal and village councils to integrate energy efficiency into local governance. Ratepayers must be encouraged and supported through incentives, awareness programmes and regulatory frameworks that promote sustainable energy practices at the grassroots level.
The nation looks to the SSEA for decisive leadership at this time. A coordinated and visionary approach today will ensure a more sustainable and energy-secure future for Sri Lanka.
