MICE travellers to drop by 25%
Sri Lanka is likely to see a drop of 25 per cent in events and conventions this year following the outbreak of the war in West Asia.
With tourism in general dropping since last month, Sri Lanka is likely to see a drop in MICE business by 25 per cent, CDC Events Managing Director Imran Hassan told The Business Times.
He noted that with the war going on there it is expected that arrivals will drop for the MICE segment as well.
However, if Sri Lanka wants to sustain itself and grab some of the business moving to West Asia then they need to focus on carrying out a campaign to attract these events.
Some events have been postponed in the aftermath of the war breaking out and a few cancellations have also been observed, officials said.
The drop in MICE events will create a serious concern at a time when they are underrepresented at the board level of any of the tourism bodies as well.
It was found that the association for MICE segment, SLAPCEO has not been given a representation on the board of the Convention Bureau and the industry is not receiving the necessary boost it requires.
Mr. Hassan said that the government’s stance in appointing one Chairman for both the Hotel School and the Convention Bureau shows a lack of priority accorded to the MICE segment in the country.
A key industry that generates global conferences and events, MICE is relevant to the tourism industry in Sri Lanka.
