It was a special evening on April 4 as Sri-Lankan born Australian singer Derrick Junkeer joined the Bright Light orchestra comprising sight-impaired musicians at the MJF auditorium in Moratuwa. The Bright Light musicians from the Riversheen School of Music are trained by musician Melantha Perera.
The evening began on a high as Jude Jay opened the show with Michael Bublé’s iconic hit ‘Feeling Good’. As the stage lit up in brilliant colours the Bright Light orchestra delivered a heart warming rendition of ‘What a Wonderful World’ accompanied by other popular favourites.
After the break, Derrick Junkeer took the stage with a powerful performance of ‘Born Free. The romance continued as he performed the timeless Drifters hit ‘Save the Last Dance for Me’ going on to captivate the crowd with Engelbert Humperdinck classics ‘Love Me with All of Your Heart’ and ‘Man Without Love’. Adding his own unique touch, he presented his version of ‘Dream Lover’ followed by Elvis Presley’s unforgettable hit ‘It’s Now or Never’.
A touching moment was when the singer’s granddaughter, Josline, visiting Sri Lanka for the first time came on stage to present him with a bouquet of long-stemmed roses.
His soul-stirring rendition of the gospel classic ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ deeply moved the audience.
Then it was time to bring Melantha on stage to acknowledge his invaluable contribution in organising the event.
The memorable evening of music came to a joyous close with the all-time favourite ‘Sweet Caroline’.
