View(s):Rajarata University will forever be grateful to this inspirational academic
Prof. Indrakeerthi Siriweera
I was shocked when I heard of the demise of Prof. Indrakeerthi Siriweera – a wonderful academic with virtuous qualities. When I was an undergraduate of the Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, Prof. Siriweera was a Professor of History. I had enrolled for an honours degree in sociology so was not taught by him at the undergraduate level.
But I had the opportunity of a closer association with him when I assumed duties as the senior assistant registrar of the Rajarata University in 1998. At that time, he was its first Vice Chancellor. After having discussions, he assigned huge responsibilities for me, examination, academic and student affairs among them. While working as Vice Chancellor, he supported me in my work. This inspirational assistance was remarkable.
I observed that his way of speaking and writing in English and his way of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students were all very impressive. He was a remarkable academic and scholar in the field of history, but above all, a gentleman.
During his time as a Vice Chancellor he was able to develop the university by introducing various academic disciplines and infrastructure, such as the Gnanam Hostel from the Gnanam Group. Prof. Siriweera added more facilities for the University through the assistance of various donors.
Prof. Siriweera was recognised for his writing, especially short stories. In Shaladhipathi and other stories he expressed his experience of university life. We see his contribution to Sinhala literature in these works.
He was a gentle unassuming individual, never given to ostentatious talk or action. Whatever he did, he did silently and unobtrusively.
The University of Rajarata celebrated its 30th anniversary on January 6, 2026 and all Vice Chancellors and Registrars were invited to this event. I came to know that Prof. Siriweera was seriously ill and could not attend. If Prof. Siriweera had been there, he would have seen that his inspirational work, commitment and dedication had helped build a well reputed university in the North Central province.
Prof. Siriweera was a role model for young academics in the university system. He continued his scholarly work until the end. Though he is no longer with us the kindness and thoughts he shared will remain in our hearts forever.
Dear Sir, may you attain the supreme bliss of Nirvana
