Standardisation and integration, crucial for elevating healthcare
While Sri Lanka has the potential to become a recognised hub for health tourism globally, standardisation and integration are crucial for elevating healthcare quality uniformly across the country. Collaboration between government and private sectors is vital, but must navigate complex ethical, legal, and economic considerations.
Growing prospects in health tourism can significantly contribute to economic development and healthcare improvement while developing a robust regulatory framework and fostering stakeholder engagement will facilitate progress, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ruwan Ranasinghe during the Healthcare Leadership Summit held recently at the Water’s Edge Hotel in Colombo. The summit was organised for the first time by the Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes (APHNH).
Highlighting the areas of standardisation and growth, Mr. Ranasinghe stated, “At present quality of healthcare across hospitals vary which needs to be fully standardised and accredited. Initiatives to expand health tourism into global markets are underway with an ideal policy framework and marketing strategies. A draft on regulation and policy among hospitals to develop comprehensive legal and regulatory frameworks is in progress. Discussions on stakeholder collaborations to integrate government, private sector and other stakeholders towards formalised partnerships and cooperation are ongoing.”
He also pointed out the challenges among hospitals and the opportunities of improvement. “There exist challenges among hospitals such as thin boundaries between ethics, law and economics, different standards among hospitals and regulatory delays. Meanwhile there are also opportunities for improvement such as growing global demand for health tourism and high-quality services, potential to position Sri Lanka as a preferred health tourism destination and developing specialized packages and infrastructure for international patients,” he noted.
Hemas Hospitals, Managing Director, Lakith Peiris, one of the panellists during the Healthcare Leadership Summit, stressed, “Expanding access to both secondary and tertiary healthcare services, has empowered individuals to choose between private and public healthcare providers, fostering a more client-centred system. The collaboration between private institutions and government entities enhances diagnostic and treatment capacities, leading to improved health outcomes. The impact on human resources is also underlined, especially the roles of doctors, nurses, and medical professionals, emphasising the need for continuous training to elevate professionalism and skills across the board. This training not only boosts capabilities but also improves the quality of care delivered.”
Private hospital sector is portrayed as a vital player in the healthcare system, contributing to innovation, efficiency, and crisis management. The collaboration between private and government sectors allows for better analysis, strategic planning, and overall service enhancement.
