Udawatte’s ton puts St. Mary’s in command
Kegalu Vidyalaya still trail by 45 runs with six wickets in hand, as St. Mary’s College stare at a possible win in the 44th Battle of the Golds, which will reach its closing day at the Public ground in Kegalle. By stumps on the second day of the three-day annual encounter yesterday, St. Mary’s held the upper hand, following an enterprising knock of 130 runs off 212 balls from middle-order batsman Sulakshana Udawatte.
While wickets fell at regular intervals, Udawatte held on to one end to see St. Mary’s salvage Kegalu Vidyalaya’s effective bowling attack and help his side reach 245-9 before declaring their innings with an advantage of 100 runs. Udawatte struck 14 boundaries and three sixes, while his other team mates failed to impress with the bat, with only six managing to score between 10 and 19 runs.
Put into bat, Kegalu Vidyalaya were kept at bay by fierce bowling from left-arm paceman Gagana Sandaru, who picked four scalps, and man of the day Udawatte, who picked two wickets with his right-arm fast bowling. After constant struggle they were skittled out for 145 runs with Shashin Medagedara top scoring 41 runs off 65 deliveries with seven fours. The match ends today.
