A legacy of diplomacy and integrity
View(s):S B Atugoda’s career was defined by his unwavering commitment to Sri Lanka. After a distinguished tenure in the Foreign Service, he served as Ambassador to Qatar (2005-2008), a period widely remembered as the “Golden Era” of ties between our two nations.
Beyond his diplomatic postings, he was a pillar of the state during challenging times, serving as the Secretary to the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). He was known for his fierce defense of the commission’s impartiality, ensuring that the voice of justice remained steady and unbiased.

S B Atugoda
Architect of Lankan community in Qatar
To the thousands of Lankans who called Doha home during his tenure, he was more than an official; he was a visionary leader. His impact on the diaspora was transformative, as he spearheaded the creation of vital institutions that still serve us today:
• SLCC Qatar: He established the Sri Lanka Coordinating Committee as an umbrella organisation to unite all Lankan associations.
• SLCBF & SLBC: He was the driving force behind the Sri Lankan Community Benevolent Fund and the Sri Lanka Business Council, ensuring both the welfare of workers and the growth of our entrepreneurs.
A voice for the nation
Who can forget his courageous presence on the world stage? At the 2006 International Conference in Doha, he delivered his famous “Democracy vs Terror” address. At the height of the conflict back home, he stood tall, eloquently defending Sri Lanka’s democratic institutions and our right to peace.
Ambassador Atugoda was a man of intellect, grace, and an iron will to do what was right for his country. As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life lived in service of others.
“His work was his message, and his legacy is the strengthened bond between nations and the united community he leaves behind.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May he attain the Supreme Bliss of Nibbana.
