Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day marked in Chennai

Sri Lanka’s Deputy High Commission conducted the country’s 78th National day reception at Hotel Leela Palace in Chennai last week.

Minister for IT & Digital Services Palanivel Thiaga Rajan participated as the chief guest.

Actor and BJP leader R Sarath Kumar, Industrialists Jose Charles Martin and Leema Rose were guests of honor at the event.

Senior government officials, trading and industrial representatives numbering more than 350 also attended the reception as special guests.  Sri Lanka’s Dy High Commissioner Ganesanathan Geathiswaran in his speech thanked the guests and said that their presence at the programme reflected long lasting close ties between Sri Lanka and India, especially Tamil Nadu.

He also thanked the Indian and TN governments for extending timely support to Sri Lanka during its recent period of crisis.  Considering the long standing close relations, Dr Geathiswaran emphasized the commitment to deepen cooperation in trade, tourism, investment and people-to-people ties aiming to promote mutual development of both the nations.

The Sri Lanka-South Indian Business Association was formally inaugurated during this programme.
