The Sunday Times this month highlighted a tragic death of a seven-year-old child at the Randiya Uyana Housing Complex, Modera due to a chunk of concrete slab fallingl on his head.
The occupants of this housing complex are reported to have brought this health hazard to the notice of the Urban Development Authority authorities as early as 2019 but no action had been taken despite repeated reminders.
In the same vein, I wish to draw the immediate attention of the authorities to a dangerous threat that has been allowed to persist for over a month at the entrance to Rupasinghe Mawatha from Kandewatta Road, Nugegoda.
Two large Hume pipes (concrete cylinders) have been left at this location, posing an imminent threat to pedestrians, motorists, and especially schoolchildren who use this busy road daily. The size, weight, and unstable positioning of these two concrete structures make them a potential death trap, particularly during peak traffic hours, at night, or in adverse weather conditions.
In a similar incident in the recent past, a Hume pipe rolled over and claimed the life of a school student in a southern town. Thousands of road users take this road daily.
I therefore strongly urge the Mirihana Police and the Kotte Municipal Council to immediately remove these Hume pipes and eliminate this hazard without further delay.
