Sri Lankan television continues to explore socially relevant themes through compelling storytelling, and the upcoming teledrama ‘Api Mirisse’ emerges as a timely addition to this trend, shedding light on the growing menace of drugs within a popular tourist destination. Set against the vibrant coastal backdrop of Mirissa, a location celebrated for its sun-kissed beaches, party vibes and lively tourism culture, the teledrama peels away the postcard beauty to reveal a more complex reality unfolding beneath the surface.
Launched last week in Colombo, ‘Api Mirisse’ draws inspiration from true-to-life experiences, tracing the intertwined lives of individuals from diverse social backgrounds whose journeys unfold amid addiction, temptation and its far-reaching consequences.

Directed by popular singer and music director Mario Ananda and produced by his sister Dulanjali Chathurya, the production blends drama with a strong social message, unfolding against the scenic southern coastline of the island. Blending emotion, realism and social commentary, the production seeks not only to entertain but also to provoke reflection on an issue increasingly affecting communities across the island.
Drawing inspiration from real-life experiences, ‘Api Mirisse’ delves into the complex realities surrounding drug abuse and its ripple effects across Sri Lankan society. The narrative brings together characters from diverse backgrounds, weaving their personal struggles, relationships and hopes into a story that is both emotionally compelling and socially reflective. Filmed in picturesque locations including Mirissa, Galle, Beruwala, Moragalla and Panadura, the teledrama compares tranquil coastal beauty with the harsh realities faced by its characters.

A multi-talented creative force behind the project, Mario Ananda handles direction, music composition, screenplay, dialogues and editing, while cinematography is by Nevinda Jayasena under ‘Mario Ananda Productions’.
The ensemble cast features Nethali Nanayakkara, Dharmapriya Dias, Sarath Kulanga, Buddhika Jayaratne, Tushini Fernando, Harsha Tennakoon, Ryan Van Rooyen, Anuradha Edirisinghe, Anuradha Mallawarachchi, Madhushan Nanayakkara, Mario Ananda, Rajeev Madhumadhawa, Dulanjali Chathurya, Savindi Thilakaratne and Tumira Masinghe, promising a performance-driven narrative.
Coming from a musical lineage as the son of legendary playback singer Gratian Ananda, Mario Ananda’s latest venture reflects his continuing evolution as a storyteller, using the small screen not only for entertainment but also as a platform to spark conversation on pressing social concerns.
