The National Audit Office (NAO) is undergoing a major transformation with the enhancing of capacity in governance, audit planning, and specialised audits, the Auditor General’s Department announced.

This programme is being implemented under the public financial management strengthening project, supported by the World Bank, European Union (EU), and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

The financial management capacity building project with a grant of EUR 9.8 million is focused on the consolidation of public finance institutions, procurement, and auditing.

The main objective of the project is to address the shortcomings in the management of public finance that caused the economic crisis.

Under the signed grant agreement, the amount of US$ 3.5 million will be received by the Auditor General’s Department, and the activities of the NAO will be completed by November 30, 2026, as stated by acting Auditor General G. H. D. Dharmapala in his latest report.

According to the action plan prepared by the department, the estimated cost for the project period is Rs. 1,050 million, he said, adding that the project will strengthen the NAO to deliver on its enhanced audit mandate.

It will help the NAO in improving the quality of audits in the public sector and deliver the audit reports in a timely manner while enhancing the skills and competences of audit officers and ensure compliance with international standards, he pointed out.

Several sub-groups (Core-Groups) are operational to develop the special audit areas of the NAO. They are Risk Based Audit Methodology, Procurement Audit, Environment Audit, Citizen Participatory Audit and Performance Audit
