Next month’s visit to Sri Lanka by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva along with the completion of a 6-day fact-finding mission by the IMF underscores the significance the international agency places on the country’s reform programme.

IMF Asia and Pacific Department Director Krishna Srinivasan, disclosed that the Managing Director’s visit is envisioned to “take stock of Sri Lanka’s progress under the IMF-supported programme and to engage directly with the country’s leadership on the way forward.”

The IMF “recognises the difficult reforms already undertaken and the importance of maintaining momentum while safeguarding social stability, the Presidential Secretariat quoted Mr. Srinivasan as saying at a meeting with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. During the recent visit, the mission assessed recent macroeconomic developments, fiscal/monetary performance, as well as the progress under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), which has been the backbone of Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts since the crisis.

The President emphasised Sri Lanka’s commitment to macroeconomic stability while underlining that it must also remain “people-centered, transparent, and nationally owned.”

“The President conveyed that economic recovery cannot be measured by numbers alone, but by its impact on livelihoods and long-term national resilience,” the Presidential Secretariat said in a statement.
