When Heshani Nawodya was just 16, a simple request from her brother turned into a moment that changed everything. A chef by profession, helping him with a wedding cake for an order ignited a spark. Today, a few years down the road, she has baked for over 350 clients, creating custom orders and wedding cakes, and now fills her December with festive Christmas goodies that are fast becoming a favourite for many.

Harshani never went to a baking school; she learned by experimenting late at night, and slowly mastering the art of cake decoration and baking. What began as a one-off favour became regular birthday cakes for colleagues and eventually a trusted network that helps her business grow by word of mouth.

The holiday season has become the heart of her baking calendar. Her Christmas menu includes daily cakes, festive Christmas cakes, and yule logs. Each cake is baked only after an order is placed, so nothing sits on a shelf. Every decoration is done by hand. She often begins prepping as early as November, soaking fruits, prepping batter so that when Christmas arrives, her kitchen becomes a warm workshop of festive aromas and gentle clinks of cake tins.

For Harshani, Christmas baking is about helping people celebrate their moments — big or small — with a slice of sweetness, a hint of nostalgia, and the unmistakable taste of home.

If you had told Salome Jansz a few years ago that she would one day become one of Colombo’s most sought-after Christmas bakers, she would have laughed. But life has a way of nudging us toward our gifts, and in Salome’s case, it began with a simple chicken pie.

Encouraged by compliments from colleagues who already admired the platters she styled at work, she posted her first chicken pie for sale. It went viral almost instantly. Orders poured in, weekends transformed into baking marathons, and before she knew it, this casual experiment became a brand. A colleague created a Facebook page for her, and Simply Delicious by Salo was born.

Her mother’s bruedher recipe, once made in small batches for friends, became the star of her Christmas menu, off season as well. Today she offers two much-loved versions: the classic bruedher, buttery and tender, and the luxurious citrus & rum bruedher, made with fresh oranges, rum and premium ingredients she often carries home from overseas.

Her Christmas menu has grown into a beautiful spread of festive favourites: love cake, rich Christmas cake, chicken pies, roast beef, roast pork, pasta, quiches, lasagnas and more. Salome does every single step herself: the mixing, baking, slicing, wrapping, coordinating deliveries. For her customers, this personal touch is priceless.

Why do people love her Christmas goodies so much? Salome believes the secret is simple: ingredients and intention. “If you’re feeding a family, you use the best ingredients,” she says. “I want my customers to feel that same care.” Every item on her menu is made the way one would bake for loved ones — lovingly, generously, without shortcuts.

Though she works full-time, baking is her sanctuary. It is where she unwinds, resets, and pours her creativity into something people look forward to all year. Christmas may be hectic, but the joy of knowing her food becomes part of someone’s holiday memories makes it deeply fulfilling.

For Zuhara, baking has always been about creativity, care and the quiet joy of making something meaningful. Though she doesn’t come from a traditional baking background, her love for desserts began early, fuelled by curiosity, experimentation and the unwavering encouragement of her mother.

Zuhara officially launched her baking journey in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, opening an Instagram page. Starting small, she slowly built her name through delicious cheesecakes. Particularly her no-bake varieties, which were still relatively rare at the time. Tangy, creamy and indulgent, they quickly became her signature, and word of mouth helped her progress from individual orders to large wedding and corporate requests.

Christmas baking has been a part of her business for the past three years. “There’s something different about Christmas,” she says. “The lights, the colours, the endless possibilities for design. It brings out so much inspiration.” Her Christmas menu evolves every year, with new ideas introduced to keep things fresh and exciting.

This season, Zuhara is introducing a beautifully curated Christmas wreath treat box, thoughtfully arranged with festive goodies designed for sharing and gifting. Treat boxes are filled with cupcakes and sugar cookies, love cake and rich cake.

Her most requested items during Christmas are the treat boxes and themed cakes, while her personal favourite remains no-bake cheesecake – a dessert she believes deserves more appreciation. She sources ingredients from trusted suppliers and takes great care to maintain hygiene and quality in her home bakery.

What truly sets her Christmas offerings apart is personalization. Every design is carefully customised to suit the client’s vision, whether it’s a corporate hamper, a wedding favour or a festive gift box. She experiments freely with recipes, creating eggless cakes when needed and refining flavours to suit different preferences, without compromising taste.

And burnout prevention? “I always have my me time,” she insists. After completing orders, she goes out with family and friends, deliberately stepping away from the constant pull of baking. She watches ‘Home Alone’ every Christmas, a tradition she maintains religiously. And despite baking for everyone else, this self-proclaimed “big sweet tooth” always makes sure to “gobble up” at least one of everything she makes. Her weakness? Coffee cake.
