How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given
View(s):What exactly hit our beautiful island this past week, I query
Yes, it was a cyclone, but incessant showers and winds that howled – it was eerie!
For some heavy downpours whilst some an ever-persistent drizzle.
We in Colombo looked out of windows oft in the shelter of our home and gave a grumble;
Sure some had some water under doors, waterlogged gardens yet we did roam.
Then we got calls from kith and kin many from afar and not so far from home;
Sadly, the flood waters rose and tragically many homes under earthslips and lives snuffed out in a wink
Some still marooned even today, with no power and clean water as they watch the innocent sink.
We watched in disbelief and did not quite know what to say or do
Our hearts say “We must act – yes, the hour is definitely NOW!
A sea of people – fellow brothers and sisters without water, electricity and food
Thankful for many organizations, churches, groups of people and even past pupils of schools out there doing good;
Coming together to be there where needs are the most. Somehow;
As one slogan said “Together we can make a difference” indeed that’s happening now
In times like this we are reminded of our common humanity
Oh if we can just see beyond our differences – and realize, yes, but far more commonality.
Thousands, no millions are suffering right now all over our land
Let’s you and I do our bit for whoever and wherever taking our stand
For me I think afresh of what Advent means and meant?
Centuries ago people whether shepherd or magi sought Him as they went
Awaited the coming of a Messiah holding onto HOPE in ‘the waiting’
So let’s raise hope afresh, by living out compassion, kindness in the face of lamenting
And yes, generosity- and a giving of our time so that others may have renewed hope again;
And lift their heads up to the hills where help comes down like rain.
In Bethlehem that starry night the Wondrous Gift came so silently
Born in a lowly stable to a carpenter and his betrothed, Mary
They that awaited recognized the GIFT and worshipped and sang hallelujahs of praise
May we this season revisit that lowly stable and celebrate in a way that honours the Messiah to whom our voices we raise
And live out today and the days ahead bringing HOPE anew to a battered and bruised, a hurting nation that needs salvation and healing
I continue to sing quietly:
“Where meek souls will receive Him still
The dear Christ enters in.”
