Veggies washed away with Ditwah, farmers cry for help

Cyclone ‘Ditwah’ that triggered rains and landslides caused immense damage to vegetable crops in various areas across the country.
Most of the supplies that come into the Dambulla Economic Centre are from cultivations in Yatawatta and Pallepola Divisional Secretary areas.
However, 90 per cent of the vegetable crops have been damaged in these areas.
Tomatoes, chillies, ridge gourd, beans and brinjal were among those most affected Farmers have called for the government to intervene immediately so that they could resume their cultivation and ensure that the markets have sufficient supplies.
They said although they filled in forms and submitted them to Grama Niladharis, there has been little response.
They said the government should also consider the prices of fertilizer and pesticides in calculating the payment of damages.
