Cyclone Ditwah’s effects faded away after it went away from Sri Lanka, however the high rainfall during that time had affected the mountainous areas as more water soaked into them.
Following the Northeast Monsoon activated after the cyclone’s effects were reduced, even though the rainfall during a monsoon is far lesser than the rainfall which occurred during the cyclonic condition, even small rainfall could trigger landslides and earth slips.
Therefore, the National Building Research Organization extended the landslide early warning issued to the districts of Badulla, Kandy, Kurunegala, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya till today.
The Irrigation Department issued minor flood warnings for Mahaweli, Yan Oya, and Malwathu Oya basins due to heavy rains, with red alerts for major flooding in Mahaweli and Malwathu Oya areas.
While these warnings were later withdrawn when the water levels stabilised, residents near these rivers, especially in vulnerable areas, should remain vigilant for future alerts from the Irrigation Department and Disaster Management Centre.
